The ISA General Assembly 2020 and ISA 10th Anniversary Celebration was held in the form of webinar on November 12, 2020 at 18:00 (Beijing time).More than 100 ISA members and non-members representatives from more than 11 countries attended the meeting.

 

The meeting was moderated by Prof. Robert Karlicek, member of ISA Council of Management, The Chairman of ISA-ECC Smart Street Lighting System Specialized Committee, the Director of Center for Lighting Enabled Systems & Applications, USA. Professor of Electrical, Computer and Systems Engineering Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA.

 

Dr. Jianlin Cao, President of ISA delivered his opening and welcome address.

 

He expressed at the outset his gratitude to those who came to attend the meeting. He pointed out that ISA's work has also been hampered by COVID-19 pandemic, but under the guidance of the Council of Managment, and with the support of ISA members, many activities had been carried out this year. This year is the 10th anniversary of ISA. This meeting will also hold the 10th anniversary celebration to review the history and look forward to the future as well as thanks  predecessors and honor the advanced of ISA.

He said that he hoped to get the advice from the participants on how to develop ISA in the post-epidemic era, so that ISA can better serve its members and the development of global SSL technology and industry in the post-epidemic era.

 

At the end, he wished the meeting a complete success.

 

The meeting was proceeded with the following three parts:

 

The Section One: Working Reports

 

1. The report of the 12th ISA Executive Member Meeting

 

Prof. Warren Julian, Member of ISA Council of Management, Emeritus Professor of University of Sydney was commissioned by the Council of Management to deliver the report of the 12th ISA Executive Member Meeting (EMM) as following.

 

(1)The 12th ISA Executive Member Meeting was held on 5 November 2020 in the form of webinar. Dr. Jianlin Cao, President of ISA, Madam Ling Wu, Past President of ISA, 6 members of ISA COM, 6 members of ISA BOA and totally 12 members attended the meeting.

(2)The ISA Secretariat made the ISA Working Report 2020 at the meeting.

(3)The COM adopted the following decisions.

- Approve two new ISA new members i.e.

 Ningbo Dayang Technology Co., Ltd. 

 Hongzhiwei Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.

(4)Decided to establish the “LED Disease Control Working Group”  

(5) Decided to establish the ISA Micro-LED Committee. Appoint Mr. Qun Yan, Secretary General of SID (Society for Information Display), SID Fellow, Prof. of Fuzhou University, president of Display Training School (DTS),  as the president of ISA Micro-LED Committee.

(6) Approve the ISA Financial Report 2020  

(7) Appoint Dr. Yoshi Ohno, NIST Fellow, Past President of CIE, as the Chairman of ISA TCS. His tenure would be 2021-2023.

The ISA 12^th EMM expressed its appreciation to Mr. Andreas Scholtz, the incumbent Chairman of ISA TCS, for his leadership during his tenure (Oct.2017-Dec. 2020), for the achievements he had made for the leading role and for the progress he has made in working with the International Standards Organization.

 

(8) Approve Dr. Aleksandr Karev, the representative of APSS, take the seat of Mr. Evgeny Dolin as the member of ISA COM. 

(9) Reconfirm that according to the decision of 11th ISA Executive Member Meeting, terminated the ISA“Award of Global SSL Showcase Top 100” (Top100) by the end of 2020.  

(10) Decided to establish the ISA“Award of Global SSL TOP 100 Innovation”

(11) Decided to establish the ISA “Award of Global SSL Outstanding Industry Development Contribution”

 

The TORs of aforementioned new establishments would be issued after getting the approval of ISA EMM

 

2. ISA Working Report 2020 

 

The Co-Secretary General of ISA, presented ISA 2020 Annual Report which including:

(1) Published the 2020 Global SSL Industry Report “The Key Technology of DUV LEDs and Its Application in the Field of Sterilization and Disinfection”.

(2)Organized the 7th Meeting of BRICS SSL Collaboration Working Group.

(3)Organized the two ISA awards i.e. “ISA Global SSL Award of Outstanding Achievement (AOA)" and “ISA Global SSL Showcase Top 100 (TOP100)" 

(4)The work of the ISA-ECC Smart Street Lighting System Specialized Committee.

(5) The work of the ISA LiFi Committee

(6) Circulate the Industry Cooperation Suggestions during the COVID-19 pandemic

(7)Developed ISA New Members

(8)Prepared the Celebration of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of ISA

(9)The Plan of 2021

 

3. The Report of ISA Technical Commission of Standardization (TCS)

Mr. Andreas Scholtz, the incumbent chairman of ISA TCS, made a working report of the Technical Committee on Standardization, including two TCS meetings, the cooperation with other international standardization organizations(ISO and CIE), as well as seeking suggestions and voting on draft standards.

 

Dr. Yoshi Ohno, the incoming chairman of ISA TCS, expressed that he was honored to take on this position. He hoped at his tenure to push for a deeper partnership between TCS and CIE and establishes further cooperation with ISO. The TCS work was very challenging and he wished to serve TCS better in the next three years.

 

Section 2: The Way Forward in Post-epidemic   

 

1.“ Global SSL Industry Development and Market Trends”

Mr. Pars Mukish, Business Unit Manager - Sapphire, LED / OLED, Lighting and Display, Yole Développement (FRANCE) made a presentation on “ Global SSL Industry Development and Market Trends”

He introduced the overall development of the global SSL industry .He pointed out that the 8% global LED market CAGR was expected in the next 6 years, while the market of VCSEL would grow by 31%. The VCSEL market is expected to grow from $1.1B in 2020 to $2.7B in 2025, driven by datacom and mobile applications. The automotive lighting system market would reach $37.3B by 2023. Due to the impact of COVID-19, the UV LED market was expected to grow from $476M 2020 to $2786M in 2025, in which UVC LEDs would be the major driven force. He also analyzed the main drivers and forecasts for market development in other segments.

2. “ LED and its application in Light for Health”

Dr. Daxi Xiong, Director of Light Health Center, Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology, CAS made a presentation on” LED and its application in Light for Health”

He pointed out that after more than 30 years of rapid development, especially nearly 10 years, LED has been fully mature, from protagonist “downgraded” to general components. LED fully realized energy saving, environmental protection, long life and low cost. The quality of LED had matched or surpassed other competing light sources. The hot application of LED light sources shifts from “Universal lighting” to “Beyond lighting”.

He introduced the background of LED light source technology development and its physical mechanism. He introduced the specific application of LED in medical detection analysis and light therapy through some specific application.

He pointed out that the key problem of LED light source in medicine were: a quantitative model of the interaction between light and tissue; determine the optimal optical parameters (wavelength, energy, mode of operation, etc.); effective extraction of real signals. In terms of development of LED light sources and applications, it was necessary to develop more stronger LED light source (including small luminous angle and partial coherence, higher optical power density (pulse), wider wavelength range(200-250nm&2000nm+) ); more embedded and wearable applications; micro- light robots that integrated functions of lighting diagnosis and treatment. The most important thing he believed would be that an open thinking would lead to unlimited scenarios.

 

3. LED Developing Strategy: The future of Lighting

Mr. Evgeny Dolin, Former Member of ISA COM, Boos Lighting Group of  Russia made a presentation on “LED Developing Strategy: The future of Lighting”.

He firstly expressed his congratulations to the 10^th anniversary of ISA. He then introduced the cooperation of the global SSL industry chain between China and Russia. He highlighted that the Russian BL group was founded in 1991, including components LED production plant, production of camera lens and other optical products. And this BL group also carried out lighting engineering design, technology, standards development etc.. The group has more than 400 sales offices worldwide. He also introduced the SSL project implemented by BL Group worldwide. As a long-term strategic plan of BL Group, he looked forward to establishing strategic partnerships with leading SSL companies in China. 

  

4. Better light or Global Energy Savings: Do We Have to Choose?

Dr. Norman Bardsley, ISA Chief Analyst made a presentation on “Better light or Global Energy Savings: Do We Have to Choose?”

He pointed out that in our efforts to improve the quality of lighting, we should also pay more attention to the actual energy saving of lighting. At the same time through technological innovation to further improve the luminous efficiency of general lighting products, tap its energy saving potential, benefit all mankind.

 

5. The SSL Development and Market in Brazil

Mr. Isac Roizenblatt, Member of ISA BOA, Technical Director of Brazilian Abilux  made a presentation on ” The SSL Development and Market in Brazil”.

He said that the municipal elections of Brazil will be held on November 15, 2020.   The newly elected mayors would like to introduce modern and efficient lighting systems, which he believed that was an opportunity for foreign investors. This opportunity would also create a market for new products. INMETRO, the Brazilian agency in charge of standards and import testing, would make an important adjustment of product regulations in 2021. He mentioned that the following cooperation would be welcomed by Brazil.

-Smart lighting integration in smart city.

-Lighting spectral distribution and health lighting.

-Agricultural lighting.

-UV and infrared radiation.

-Lighting control on disease carrying insects.

-LiFi.

6. The LED Industry Development Trend of China

Dr. Jun RUAN, Secretary-General of China SSL Alliance made a presentation on “The LED Industry Development Trend of China”. 

He pointed out that the stage of China's SSL industry development would be divided as following.

2006-2015 was to promote more applications driven by increased light efficiency.

2016-2025 was technology integration driven by high value-added application.

He introduced that tn the future, the key directions of technological innovation would be: high light quality, intelligence, next generation display and automotive lighting. Innovative applications put more emphasis on application-oriented and integrated innovation. He summarized the characteristics of strategic adjustment of international giants. He summed up the situation of China's SSL industry: In 2019, the output value was 754.8B yuan, CAGR 15.5% during the “13th Five-Year Plan” Period. Consumption: In 2019, the domestic penetration of consumption is 52.7%. Exports: In 2019, the export value was 15.7 B USD, CAGR during the “13th Five-Year Plan” period was 12.55%. He illustrated by data that China's SSL technology had been leading the way in some fields from the following: the luminous efficacy of China's power white LED has increased from 150 lm/W to more than 200 lm/W; The luminous efficacy of industrialized indoor lamps is about 100 lm/W while the outdoor lamps of that was about 130 lm/W; The industrialized luminous efficacy of power silicon-based white LED chips with independent intellectual property rights has increased from 140 lm/W in 2015 to 170 lm/W in 2019.

At last, he had an outlook on the development trend of China's SSL industry in the 14th Five -Year plan. 

 

Section 3: The Celebration of ISA 10th Anniversary and the Award Ceremony

 

1. The Address to the ISA 10th Anniversary

(1)    Dr. Jianlin Cao, president of ISA, delivered his address to the ISA 10^thAnniversary   

He pointed out that the establishment of ISA in China was both accidental and inevitable. In the era of globalization, an emerging industry cannot grow to full maturity without international cooperation and exchanges. To be bigger and stronger in the world, SSL must have close interaction among R&D, manufacturing and application. The development of SSL in China could not be separated from the cooperation of other countries, and the development of global SSL also needed China. The combination of chance and necessity given the birth to ISA.

He said that since its establishment ISA uphold to cooperation with global SSL industry and R&D resources, to provide an inclusive global forum to deal with the issues on science, manufacture, standard and design of SSL. And with the aim of promoting healthy, safer and sustainable lighting at a global scale, to help to cultivate an "ecosystem" which would be appropriate to global SSL development and application. Echo the needs of the society withe more added value services to ISA members. Strive to improve peoples’ living and contribute a sustainable human society.

He took this opportunity to express his sincere gratitude to the ISA founders, the members of ISA Council of Management, Board of Advisers, and all the ISA members, as well as to the organizations and individuals who had supported and assisted ISA in the past years  

He hoped that with the collective efforts and support of everyone, “SSL lighting people” would usher into another exciting decade, so that more perfect, natural light would be expected to shine the world.

 

(2) Madam Ling Wu, founder of ISA, Past President of ISA, and President of China SSL Alliance delivered her address to the ISA 10th Anniversary.  

She pointed out that for a decade, with the common and unremitted efforts of ISA COM, BOA and all the members, ISA had become an influential international organization in SSL field. ISA with its members all over the five continents, had conducted worldwide exchanges and cooperation on SSL policy, technology, standards and applications, promoted the innovation and application of the new SSL technology, pushed forward the sustainable development of the global SSL industry. So to speak that ISA had played an active role in promoting the development and application of the global SSL industry in the past decade, and has made a contribution to improving people's quality of life. This was very much in line with the "original intention" of setting up ISA, for which she felt pleased and proud.

She thanked like-minded people from all over the world for their help and support in the past decade, and sincerely wished ISA, under the leadership of President Cao and with everyone's support, to set sail once again and successfully start the next brilliant decade.

 

(3)Prof. Shuji Nakamura, Co-Chair of ISA BOA，Laureate of 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics，Professor of University of California, Santa Barbara made his video address to the ISA 10th Anniversary.

He pointed out that when the first high brightness Gan-based blue light LED was born in 1993, no one could imagine that it would bring such tremendous changes to the lighting industry. LED now days has completely replaced the traditional lighting, and save energy, reduce emissions, and bring available, affordable lighting to people in poor, remote areas without accessing electricity.

He said, although had no time to participate in most of the activities of ISA, he did paid attention to ISA all the time. He feel that ISA has got commendable accomplishments in the following aspects in the past ten years.

First, ISA had gathered so many inventors and outstanding contributors of SSL of the world to provide advice and suggestions for the global SSL development.

Second, ISA had built up a global communication platform and promoted the cooperation and communication in R&D, manufacturing, applications and other aspects by collaborating global SSL major players at upstream, midstream and downstream.   

Third, ISA had established a Technical Committee on Standardization (TCS) and cooperated with CIE, ISO and other international standards organizations to promote the output of international SSL standards by TCS Recommendations.  

Fourth, ISA had always been on its way to explore SSL new applications, such as UV fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, poultry farm and applications of LiFi etc.

Fifth, ISA had promoted SSL to countries or regions where had power shortage or were unable to access electricity, in order to benefit the poor groups and communities.     

He expressed his vision for the next 10 years. First,  UV LED lighting should be installed everywhere like a general lighting. Then no more pandemic due to COVID-19 and other new novel viruses. Second, laser lighting was coming as next lighting for reducing energy consumption and used for high speed communications.

He pointed out that human being has advanced science and technology, while the science and technology has in turn provided us with powerful means to explore the unknown fields. It is hard to predict what would happen in next ten years from now, but one thing was for sure: if we were diligent, brave and unremitting to explore, we would surely create more exciting achievements. He finally wished ISA score more success in the next decade.

 

2. Award Ceremony

Prof. Robert Karlicek the moderator of this Meeting, introduced on behalf of ISA   that this year marks the 10th Anniversary. While we take this opportunity to review what we have achieved we do need to recognizes and honor the individuals, members and organizations that have contributed to the ISA over the past decade.

Mr. Harry Verhaar, Head of Public & Government Affairs, Signify delivered an acceptance remarks on behalf of the winners of this Award.

(4) Award of the Outstanding Contributor to ISA

Prof. Warren Julian， Member of ISA COM，emeritus professor of University of Sydney, announced the winners of the Award of the Outstanding Contributor to ISA. (49 individuals including the team leaders of ISA TCS totally)

Mr. Hong Xu, President and CTO of Xiamen Lumigro Technology Co., Ltd. Delivered an acceptance remarks on behalf of the winners of this Award.

(5) Award of the Outstanding Partner for ISA International Cooperation

Dr. Yoshi Ohno, Member of ISA BOA, Past President of CIE, Research Fellow of National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced the winners of the Award of the Outstanding Partner for ISA International Cooperation (12 organizations totally) .

Mr. Shyam Sujan, Member of ISA COM, Secretary General of Electric Lamp and Component Manufacturers Association of India (ELCOMA) delivered an acceptance remarks on behalf of the winners of this Award.

(6) Award of the Outstanding Contribution as a Jury Member of “Global SSL Award of Outstanding Achievement”

Mr. Frederic Quan, the member of BOA, the former President and CEO of the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association, USA announced the winners of the Award of the Outstanding Contribution as a Jury Member of “Global SSL Award of Outstanding Achievement”(10 Jury Members totally).

(7) Award of the Outstanding Contribution as a Jury Member of “Global SSL Showcase Top 100”

Mr. Carlos Lee, the member of ISA COM, the Director General of EPIC, announced the winners of the Award of the Outstanding Contribution as a Jury Member of “Global SSL Showcase Top 100”(12 Jury Members totally).

Mr. Evegeny Dolin, a former member of the ISA COM, Past Director General of LED and LED-based Systems Manufacturer’s Non-profit Partnership (NPRPSS) of Russia delivered an acceptance remarks on behalf of the winners of this Award.

 There were 134 winners totally from individuals, ISA members, R&D organizations and enterprises won these awards. The winners would receive the medals tailored for every winner and signed by ISA president.

 

3. Reveal the Two ISA International Award

(1) The Award of ISA Global SSL Award of Outstanding Achievement 2020

Madam. Ling Wu, the President of CSA, the past president of ISA, revealed the winners of the Award of ISA Global SSL Award of Outstanding Achievement 2020 (AOA). She announced that the winners of the ISA AOA 2020 was Prof.Warren Julia and Osram respectively. She introduced that the award ceremony of “ISA Global SSL Award of Outstanding Achievement (2020)” will be held at the opening ceremony of SSLCHINA in Shenzhen on November 24. She welcomed all of the participants today to attend the award ceremony of AOA at Shenzhen.

(2)The Award of ISA Global SSL Showcase Top 100 (2020)

Prof. Guoqi Zhang, Co-chair of ISA BOA, Professor of Delft University of Technology, revealed the winners of the Award of ISA Global SSL Showcase Top 100 (2020) (17 winners totally).

He said that, according to the decision of the ISA 11^th EMM, the "ISA Global SSL Showcase Top 100" was hold its final round this year. He further introduced that since the award was established in 2003, 105 outstanding SSL Showcases had been awarded. He would like to thank all of them for their support and active participation.   Prof. Zhang said that ISA would set up a new award next year according to the decision of  ISA 12^th EMM held last week. And he invited everyone continually to participate in this newly established awards. He finally said that the award ceremony of the "ISA Global SSL Showcase Top 100" would be held on November 25 in Shenzhen in conjunction with SSLCHINA 2020. She welcomed all of the participants today to attend the award ceremony of TOP 100 at Shenzhen.

 

4. The Introduction of the Pamphlet of "ISA 10 YEARS" And Other Souvenirs

Dr. He Yang, Deputy Secretary General of ISA, made a brief introduction of the pamphlet of "ISA 10 YEARS" at the meeting. He reported that both the electrical version and hard copy of the pamphlet, souvenirs (bags and badges) would be mailed to the members afterwards.

 

5. Closure of the Meeting

Prof. Robert Karlicek the moderator of this Meeting, after thanked all of the participants to attend at this special occasion, closed the meeting at 21:40 Beijing time.
